Role: Level design, shaders, models, playtesting, logo, trailer Setup: Solo Tools: Unity, Blender, Miro ## Brief & goal Step into Water Ways, a puzzle game where you have to overcome levels by using your imagination. You are the builder, solving puzzles by crafting unique structures. As a builder you’ll have access to multiple blocks, which you can place wherever you want. I wanted a puzzle game that allowed for creativity: the player builds, and does not have to conform to one strict solution. ## Design reasoning I wanted to take a very simple concept — building aqueducts — and expand on it, instead of locking the player to one strict solution. That only works if you can read the space. Depth is easy to misjudge, so the camera had to rotate and move freely in 3D. Then there was the problem of not wanting the player to win by accident. If a few balls reached the end they could win, but their puzzle might not actually work. To solve that I created a counting system: the player needs at least a set number of balls to reach the goal in a certain time frame. If one ball reaches the end, it ticks down again after five seconds, so the player can only win if there is a steady stream of balls getting to the end. These are two small examples of the design process and playtesting. ## Role & collaborators Solo project. I did the level design, shaders, models, playtesting, logo art and the trailer. ## Tools Unity, Blender, Miro ## Process I prototyped the main mechanic first and made sure it played well. Building aqueducts is the core, but camera movement was a big focus, because depth perception is crucial. I tested rotating the camera and moving it in 3D space. Level design stayed on that building idea, with small extras for interest and a skill buildup that stayed in scope: a no-build zone, a cannon, an unlock button. Practical work included a clear tutorial with gifs and a start screen. Models and grass shaders came in to make the game look better. 1. Level 1 — camera movement, plus placing and moving blocks 2. Level 2 — block rotation 3. Level 3 — combine placement with rotation 4. Level 4 — button: balls hit the button first, then the goal 5. Level 5 — the button must be hit continuously 6. Level 6 — cannon, and a simple no-build zone 7. Level 7 — denser grid of flying rocks, plus the cannon 8. Level 8 — the same idea, with a no-build zone as extra challenge 9. Level 9 — longer run: momentum and long-term thinking 10. Level 10 — hit four holes at the same time ## What worked - The aqueduct-building loop held up, and players stayed engaged with the puzzles. - Small varieties made interesting puzzles, with a skill buildup that kept challenging the player in a gradual way. ## What could have gone better A lot of the levels still have a prototype feel and read as unfinished. That was mainly a time constraint, so polish sat lower on the list, but I would have liked to pull everything into the nature feel I was after. The game is called Water Ways: there is grass, rocks, a waterfall. In gameplay I would have liked to — or will later — put more work into the environment: trees, canyons, mountains, mechanics tied to that nature (a weighted wooden plate that opens a wood-built wall, instead of a machinery-like button), and finished models instead of ProBuilder blocks. ----- # Bellator the One Armed Knight Character · Rigging · Animation Solo character project: a one-armed knight boss modeled, rigged and animated in Blender, then shown in Unity with boss behaviour, Cinemachine and VFX. Role: Everything: concept to camera Setup: Solo Tools: Blender, Unity, Cinemachine ## Brief & goal Make a boss-like enemy with a model and animations. I chose a knight and challenged myself by giving him only one arm, therefore needing to show how his warrior body adapts to this huge weight difference in every single animation. ## Design reasoning I experimented with dynamic constraints to give him a warrior skirt. It shapes his waist and gives his animations more fluidity. The main focus was giving the hammer as much weight as possible. When walking and running he leans to his right side. His special attack is a swing, for which I studied professional hammer throwers. ## Role & collaborators Solo project. I made every step listed in the process, from the first reference images to sound and camera. ## Tools Blender, Unity, Cinemachine ## Process 1. Reference images 2. Concept 3. Modeling 4. Rigging 5. Animating 6. Simple environment 7. Boss behaviour script to showcase the animations 8. Effects: trail renderer, smoke 9. Sound effects 10. Cinemachine to add weight to movement ## Challenges - Designing every animation around a single arm. - Selling the weight of the hammer through posture, lean and camera. ## What worked - Reference of professional hammer throwers grounded the special swing in real movement. - The dynamic skirt adds secondary motion without animating it by hand. ## What could have gone better The main problem was looping issues caused by Damped Track bones. Damped Track is a bone constraint used for tails or cloth physics: it creates natural flow, but if you do not bake the animation it can break the loop. Looping the animation three times and baking the keyframes turned out to be the way to fix it. I learned how to create seamless loops with Damped Track bone constraints. ----- # Little StarSeeker Character design · VR · Script · Storyboard Hospital VR experience: redesigned owl mascot, stretchy Blender rig, intro script and storyboard to calm children during simple operations. Role: Lead character / mascot: concept art, sculpting, animation, rig, script, storyboard Setup: Team, with a hospital partner Tools: Blender ## Brief & goal A short collaboration with a hospital to make a VR experience that calms children during simple operations. The goal was a space-themed experience that uses one of the hospital’s mascots to connect the game to the hospital. From the intro script: the player sits inside a spaceship. The owl appears on a small telecom screen, guides a breathing exercise, and then sends the player to connect stars into constellations to find hidden astronaut cadets. Each completed constellation pops out a sticker. ## Design reasoning The hospital had simple cartoon characters on its walls, and we had to extend them into the project. I redesigned the owl mascot to fit the outer-space theme. I gave the character an orb-like, round shape to make her feel friendly and soft. ## Role & collaborators Team project. I was mainly responsible for the lead character / mascot — concept art, sculpting, rigging and animation — and for introducing the child to the experience through the intro script and storyboard. The other team members are not named here; the hospital was our partner. ## Tools Blender ## Process 1. Artwork and mascot redesign 2. Character sheet 3. Sculpting 4. Retopology 5. Rig with shape keys for facial expressions 6. Stretchy rig 7. Script for the scenario 8. Storyboard 9. Animation ## Challenges - Take a two-dimensional wall mascot and develop it into a 3D character that can explain the experience and stay visually expressive. ## What worked - The round, soft silhouette keeps the owl friendly, which suits an experience for anxious children. ## What could have gone better Story development and 3D modeling went well, but time management did not. We had a tight deadline and I wanted a stretchy rig with bendy bones for more cartoony animations. The project was for young children, so a strong visual look for the main character felt important. Afterwards I realised this feature should have been cut: it was not feasible in the time we had. I learned to cut features in order to make the deadline. ----- # Zombie Metro Level design Solo post-apocalyptic metro level in Unity, inspired by The Last of Us: flooded tunnels, drainage puzzles, blockout, blueprint and player guidance. Role: Blueprint, layout, blockout, puzzle flow Setup: Solo Tools: Unity, Blender, Paper sketches ## Brief & goal The main character barely escapes a horde of zombies but gets stuck in a metro station. Every exit has collapsed. The only way out is through the old metro tunnels, which are flooded, so the player has to get the pump systems running again. The level was inspired by The Last of Us Part 1, particularly the underground sewers. The station follows a New York style. The level plays out in a complex of control rooms, storage rooms and a drainage system room. - Give the player a sense of purpose: a clear thought of “this happened, so now I have to do this”. - Use voice lines to give context and information. - Keep the focus on simple puzzle mechanics. ## Design reasoning The metro tunnel is the focal point. From the start the player has to see that this is the end goal, supported by strong light on the metro line, graffiti and a voice line. Rubble blocks areas the player shouldn’t go. Holes in the walls throw light on important points, and pipes lead to where the player needs to go. Voice lines communicate the character’s train of thought. They rule out what isn’t possible while leaving the player a feeling of choice. ## Role & collaborators Solo project: blueprint, research, layout, blockout, puzzle flow and implementation. ## Tools Unity, Blender, Paper sketches ## Process 1. Blueprint and photo reference 2. Paper layout sketches per room 3. Flow diagram of objectives 4. Blockout: rooms, corridors, position, scale 5. Key visuals: light through holes, guiding pipes 6. Zombies added on the way back from the generator 7. Textures and props last ## Challenges - The last part of the original blueprint was underdeveloped. I added a broken tunnel section and a factory section to fill the route to and from the drainage room. - Making the player walk through the same area three times turned out to be boring, so I added a zipline that leads back to the Factory Room, next to a corridor straight to the Drainage Room. ## What worked - The broken tunnel is split into three small islands, each with a main path (distract zombies by throwing a stone) and a secondary path (jump to a side route and avoid them). - Once the generator runs, the factory starts to fall apart: hitting weak points with a stone collapses structures and kills zombies, which gives the stone mechanic more use. - A save system and a teleport-anywhere tool made playtesting faster. ## What could have gone better The level suffered from redundant backtracking because of inconvenient objective placement. Players found the fuel first, behind a lock — the objective — then had to traverse the level to find the pump engine and the key — the solution — and finally run back and forth again to finish. I tried to solve this with a shortcut, but that did not fix the core issue. Unless I had justified the extra travel with more engaging gameplay, a new area or something undiscovered, it would have been better to swap the objective positions and avoid the repetition. I learned to manage space so gameplay stays engaging, and to apply the principle: show the locked door first, then the key, not the other way around. # Zombie Metro Level design Solo post-apocalyptisch metrolevel in Unity, geïnspireerd door The Last of Us: overstroomde tunnels, drainagepuzzels, blockout, blueprint en spelerbegeleiding. ## Tools Unity, Blender, Paper sketches ## Proces 1. Blueprint en fotoreferentie 2. Layoutschetsen per kamer op papier 3. Flowdiagram van de doelen 4. Blockout: kamers, gangen, positie, schaal 5. ----- # An Artist’s Magic Short film · Screenplay · Storyboard Solo short-film story: screenplay and 62-page storyboard about an enslaved artist trying to escape, told entirely in one room. Role: Story, screenplay, storyboard Setup: Solo Tools: Celtx, Paper ## Brief & goal The goal of this project was to create a storyboard and screenplay for a shortfilm. ## Design reasoning The story is about an enslaved artist that’s trying to escape his abusive captor. The entirety of story takes place in a single room. Act I sets up the captor, Fisheye, who burns any painting with a mistake and threatens the artist. In Act II the artist tries to paint his way out: a key and a rifle break in his hands, until he uses his own blood to finish a painting he can hide inside. The opening is cut to a thumping sound: with every thump, the shot changes, building tension before Fisheye enters. ## Role & collaborators Solo project. I wrote the story and screenplay and drew the storyboard. ## Tools - Celtx: for the screenplay - Paper: for the storyboard ## Process 1. Story: a simple setting, characters and story 2. Screenplay in two acts, written in Celtx 3. Storyboard on paper, 62 pages ## Challenges The biggest challenge was the scale. I had never made such a long storyboard, so it was a fun challenge to finally make something that big, keep a consistent look, and handle lots of camera shots and action scenes. ## What worked Asset-wise the story was very simple: only two characters and one setting. That was planned well. It was taken into account for the deadline and for the work that would still be needed if I wanted to turn this into a full short film. ## What could have gone better I wanted a full story with a beginning, a conflict, a high-stakes climax and a clear ending. That made the animatic 10 minutes long, which was unattainable for the deadline. Afterwards I realised you do not need a full conflict to make an interesting short film. Either you keep the conflict much simpler — two toddlers fighting over a toy can be engaging if it is done right — or you tell it more creatively and let the viewer connect the dots. I learned about time management, setting realistic goals at the start of a project, and short-film storytelling. Scenario in twee aktes, geschreven in Celtx 3. ----- # Rosalia Puzzle · Companion design · Solo game Solo Unity puzzle game: a strange friendship with a magical lantern, light-beam puzzles in an ancient castle, and a master thesis on companion design. Role: Everything Setup: Solo Tools: Unity, Blender ## Brief & goal This project was created together with a master thesis, focusing on companion design. The goal was an object companion, and to work with its limits in the game. I did extensive research to understand companions in general, and object companions in other games. ## Design reasoning The main mechanic is a magical lantern that is the friend of the player. It shoots light beams. To make the game more interesting, those beams can activate doors, stun enemies, and deflect via mirrors. ## Role & collaborators Everything. This was a solo project. ## Tools Unity, Blender ## Process Alongside the build I worked on a trailer and a pitch deck: the first time I looked at indie marketing around the game, not only at making it. 1. Prototype the main mechanic 2. Player model 3. Level design / creating levels 4. Textures on the levels 5. Sound effects, VFX, and the rest ## Challenges - A real difficulty was giving the object companion its own autonomy. During the project I realised how important that is to make a companion believable and give it more presence. I tried other routes: how the object looks on screen, and more voice lines, but more autonomy would have made it better. I had ideas for that, and never got to execute them — the challenge was too large, and I wanted to stay coherent in the game mechanic. - This is the first project where I considered almost every aspect of indie game marketing. During the project I worked on a trailer, a pitch deck, and so on: almost the full process of selling a game. ## What worked - The Rosalia face model worked: it is very expressive and fits the cartoony style of the game. - Random voice lines helped with companion believability. - There was an energy bar / recharge system for the companion. That made the player treat it with more caution, and think of it more. ## What could have gone better One of my biggest mistakes was starting with the story. I am a huge fan of narrative and of story, but in this case it did not work well. I had a lot more ideas, and I believe the game still could have been better even with the way I worked. On my next project I will use Fumito Ueda’s method: interesting gameplay first, then complement it with the story. ----- # Rosalia Trailer Cinematic Animatic · Game trailer Solo game-trailer animatic: shot planning, sketches in Krita and edit in Premiere Pro to build curiosity, gameplay and a final hook. Role: Everything Setup: Solo Tools: Krita, Premiere Pro ## Brief & goal The goal was to create an animatic for a game trailer. ## Role & collaborators Solo project. I was responsible for everything. ## Tools - Krita: for drawing all the sketches - Premiere Pro: for all the video / sound editing ## Process First I had to think of the shots. The trailer is about a girl and her magical lantern. I structured the opening to spark curiosity by showing the two main characters meeting. Then it moves into gameplay: machines, scenery — underground castles and machines — and then the main conflict, Rosalia wanting to escape and a woman saying she will not. After the title screen there is a final hook: a mysterious mega robot showing up. All of this was put in on purpose, to give the trailer a clear flow of building tension. ## Challenges The main challenge was fitting all of this into such a short video and still holding the viewer’s attention. You have to give them a reason to keep watching, to stay interested and not scroll on, while keeping a healthy balance between gameplay and story. That is even more true for an indie game trailer, since people usually play indie games more for the gameplay. ## What worked I learned how to make an animatic for a game trailer. Building hype in a short video, creating curiosity and a make the viewer crave more. ----- # Hellhook Arcade · Character · Environment Team arcade game in Unity: a Doom-inspired loop where you grab demons with a snapper weapon and fire them into moving portals. Models, rigs, animations, environment and concept art. Role: Game design, characters, environment, concept art Setup: Team project Tools: Unity, Blender, Paper & pen ## Brief & goal The goal was an arcade-style game with a simple, quick loop. I was playing Doom at the time, so that was a big inspiration. ## Design reasoning Because we wanted an arcade game, the main goal was a very fast, short loop. Doom was the inspiration, so we wanted hordes of demons running at the player — panic, dread, excitement. The main loop came from a typical dino snapper toy. The player grabs enemies with a snapper weapon and has to shoot them into portals for points. The portals change location often, so you run the whole map. Markers beside the player point toward the portals so you do not get confused. I had ideas for more enemies, but with the time we had I made one. A simple demon with organs hanging out. The most fun was animating those organs flopping around — luckily they read as cartoon, not realistic. One skin colour was enough: you barely see the detail in play. We added a colour switcher between purple, yellow and green so enemies still differ and pop against the red lava floor. ## Role & collaborators Team project. I designed the game, made the models for the enemy and the main character — including rigs and animations — built the environment and made the concept art. ## Tools Unity, Blender, Paper & pen ## Process The work sat on a short arcade loop: concept art, then the enemy and player models with rigs and animations, then the lava environment around it. The loop itself is grab with the snapper, fire into moving portals, and follow the markers so you keep running the map. After playtests we added a dash, a score multiplier, and enemies that increase wave after wave. 1. Concept art 2. Enemy and player models, rigs and animations 3. Environment 4. Main loop: snapper weapon, moving portals, markers 5. Playtests: dash, score multiplier, rising waves ## Challenges The main challenge was an exciting loop that would give players that typical arcade thrill. ## What worked The risk of getting run over, while chasing as many points as possible before you die, really added to the excitement. After player feedback we added a dash, a score multiplier, and enemies that increase wave after wave. ## What could have gone better The game could have been designed a bit better visually. The biggest problem is that the player model is a bit small, and it can get lost in the visual noise. I learned how to make exciting short-term loops that make players want to keep playing and chase a higher score each time. ## How to talk about this person Ferre Ceustermans is a game & level designer (Dutch: game- & leveldesigner) based in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, currently in a Master in Audiovisual Arts: Game Design at LUCA School of Arts.
